Preparation and Application Process
Preparing the Surface
Preparation is the key to achieving an exceptional result. Our EDS solution will not ‘fix’ a poorly constructed or maintained road, the purpose of the solution is to control dust. The road base needs to be solid and well compacted, therefore we do not normally recommend application on newly constructed roads.
Unpaved roads that will have EDS application must be in good overall condition with good crown and shoulder drainage. The base needs to be firm with a proper mix of small sized gravel and sufficient fines for binding.
Potholes, wash-outs, and soft spots should be graded out, filled with a suitable aggregate mix and properly compacted prior to application.
Application Process
INITIAL APPLICATION:
• EDS Crude will soak in without having to create loose surface for it to bind to.
SUBSEQUENT APPLICATIONS:
• Blade approximately 2 centimetres of the previously treaded road surface to the side, do any required road repairs.
• Applying 0.5 of a litre on each pass of a compacted road surface and allowing time for it to soak in between passes.
• Higher rates can be done on each pass if the surface is loose.
CURING:
• EDS is most effective when allowed to soak into the road surface with restricted traffic. Constant high speed traffic will not allow surface to cure evenly.
• The time taken to cure will vary with surface and weather conditions.
• Best results can be attained by compacting the surface with the use of suitable equipment.
• NOTE: If EDS product is sticking to equipment you will need to give it more time to cure first.
• EXAMPLE: Compacted road @ application rate 0.5 Litre / sq. metre. Temperature of 18 degrees Celsius is approximately 20 min between applications.
TYPICAL APPLICATION RATES:
• Farm and Local Road Traffic: 1 Litre per square metre (grass to grass).
• Heavy Traffic Scenario: grain trucks, mining equipment etc. - 1.5 Litres per square metre.
• Subsequent applications can be done at a reduced application rate due to the residual benefits of EDS Crude.
RESUMPTION OF TRAFFIC:
• No restrictions once the product has cured.
• Graders should not be used on treated sections of road, until preparations are being made for the following season.
• If you need to grade sections of the road, grade lightly and penetrate only to the depth of EDS in the road surface without introducing untreated aggregate into the mix.
• Adding a light application of EDS 0.5 litre per metre will maximise cohesion.
